Indian Air Force to acquire 45 Bird Detection Radar from Foreign Vendors

India’s Ministry of Defence has invited responses by 30 September from overseas vendors to supply 45 bird detection and monitoring radar systems for installation at Indian Air Force (IAF) bases across the country.

The 30 August request for information requires these systems to be road-mobile, capable of deployment at all altitudes and able to detect large and small birds at distances of 11 km and 6 km respectively.

Bird hits have been responsible for about 9-10% of all IAF accidents over decades. However, this menace has become increasingly acute as expanding populations force birds to seek sanctuary in IAF bases.
