Timeline of terror attacks in Jammu-Kashmir after surgical strikes

The Border Security Forces (BSF) killed three terrorists in Ramgarh sector of Samba district Tuesday as an infiltration bid was foiled along the International Border in Jammu. The encounter, which injured one BSF jawan, took place at Fatwal village in Chamliyal area.

Even as this operation was underway, some 3-4 terrorists stormed into an Army base in Nagrota on the outskirts of Jammu around 5.30 am. Sources said terrorists are believed to be holed up inside the army officers’ mess.  According to reports, two terrorists  and two armymen have been killed in the exchange of fire that is still underway.

Tuesday’s twin attacks are the latest in a series of similar attacks from Pakistan’s side as tensions escalated between the two countries after Indian troops conducted ‘surgical strikes ‘ on Pakistan. Here is a list of all the major attacks since then:


November 29:

Terrorists entered the premises of 166 army unit stationed at Nagrota-based 16 Corps headquarters on the outskirts of Jammu city, reportedly killing two soldiers. In a separate infiltration bid in Samba district, three terrorists were killed by the BSF along IB. A BSF jawan was injured in the Samba operation.


November 25:

An army jawan and two terrorists were killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district. The encounter broke out in Naidkhai area after search operations were launched in the area following inputs from intelligence agencies. Two AK 47 rifles, one UBGL and other ammunition were recovered from the slain terrorists.

In another incident in Baramulla district, Indian Army and the J&K police apprehended a local terrorist after gunbattle broke out in Tujjer village of Sopore.


November 22:

A joint team of J&K Police’s Special Operations Group and Army’s 13 Rashtriya Rifles cordoned off Hajin village in Bandipore district after receiving specific inputs about presence of militants in the village. Two militants were killed in the incident and police recovered two rifles and some cash, including two Rs 2000 notes, from the killed militants.


November 16:

A policeman with the J&K Police’s elite counter insurgency force was killed in an encounter with militants in north Kashmir’s Sopore. The militants escaped after a brief gunbattle.


November 9: 

One soldier was killed in firing by Pakistani troops in Machhal Sector of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir. In retaliation, fire assault with heavy weapons was directed on many Pakistani posts. In another incident, two unidentified militants were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.


November 8:

An army jawan was killed and two others were injured in Pakistani shelling in Naushera sector of Rajouri district in Jammu province. One of the injured jawans succumbed to his injuries.


November 7: 

A Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. Two jawans were also injured in the gunfight.


November 6:

An Army jawan was killed during an encounter with terrorists who were trying to crossover to the Indian side of the border from Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir. Troops posted along LoC foiled two infiltration bids in Krishna Ghati Sector.


November 1:

Eight civilians were killed in unprovoked mortar shelling from across the border in Arnia and Rajouri respectively. In retaliatory fire, the BSF said that it destroyed 14 Pakistani posts opposite Arnia sector, besides causing heavy casualties among Rangers. Some civilians on the Pakistani side too were killed.


October 30:

An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in forest area of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir after security forces launched an anti-militancy operation in the forest area of Kupwara, acting on information about the presence of militants in the area.


October 10:

Militants strike a government building (Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute) in Sempora area of Pampore early in the morning. An encounter between militants and security forces took place in the premises in February this year which lasted for more than 48 hours.


October 8:

Policeman killed by terrorists in Shopian sector at a police post. Terrorists manage to flee. In Poonch district, Pakistani troops reportedly violate ceasefire again after firing along the border in Mendhar sector.


October 7:

Pakistan Army resort to heavy shelling and gunfire at Indian positions along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu region.


October 6:

Terrorists open fire at an army camp in Langate in Kupwara. No security personnel died but three of the terrorists involved were killed.


October 5:

Ceasefire violated four times by Pakistani troops after they resort to heavy firing and shelling on Indian Army posts and civilian areas in Poonch, Rajouri and Kupwara districts of Jammu and Kashmir.


October 4:

Suspected terrorists attacked a police station in Yaripora, Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani troops resorted to firing in Kalsiyan, Kalal and Baba Khori area of Naushera sector, in early hours. Militants attacked BSF and army camps in Baramulla town, killing one BSF soldier and wounding another.


October 3:

Pakistani troops intensify mortar shelling and firing on Indian Army posts with four ceasefire violations in one single day. Apart from Army posts, civilian areas in several sectors of Poonch district targetted.


October 2:

Pallanwala sector of Jammu and Kashmir targetted for second time in as many days, as Pakistani troops launh firing and shelling on forward areas along the Line of Control. Sixth ceasefire violation since Indian Army’s surgical strikes.


October 1:

Mortar shelling conducted in the early hours by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Pallanwalla sector of Akhnoor.


September 29:

Small arms firing by Pakistani troops at Chapriyal and Samwan along the Line of Control (LoC) in Akhnoor sector. Reportedly the third ceasefire violation since the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes on terror camps along the LoC.


September 28:

Pakistani troops resort to unprovoked firing on forward Indian positions at Sawjian. Second ceasefire violation in the month of September and first major incident following the Uri terror strikes.
